Health Club Christians

by Aaron Finley

I have noticed a trend in modern day Christians that is disturbing. I call them “ health club Christians ”. The way health club Christians treat their relationship with God is the way they would treat a health club membership. Generally being a Christian is not at the center of their lives.

They may go to church to try it out and see if it fits into their lifestyle. But if it clashes with how they want to live their lives, it is gone as fast as last nights take out.

Jesus is not something to be tried out and then be discarded at the first little bump in the road. Jesus is a person who gave everything to save us and wants only to have a relationship with us and call us a friend. Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron say, “Jesus should be put on and trusted like you trust a parachute.”

After all, even in today’s society most people would say someone was a jerk if they ditched their best friend for the newest TV show (especially since most people have the means to record it).

As Christians we cannot “sell” Christianity as the latest fad, or the “feel good” treat of the week. Becoming a Christian is not going to make all problems go away. Instead we need to show people the truth. This life is only temporary, and a day of judgment is coming. No, God is not cruel. He does not want to throw everyone into hell. Quite the opposite, He wants us to be with Him for eternity. He has given us every chance. He has done all the work. The only way anyone makes it to hell is by their own choice, by throwing God’s gift of salvation back in his face.

If you haven’t given your life to Jesus I hope you pray and commit your life to Him. Or if you would like to recommit yourself to him I am sure he would love to hear from you.
